One of Indego Africa's best-selling signature plateaus baskets, handcrafted in Rwanda with a time-honored weaving technique passed down from generations of artisans. This product is handmade with heart by Burundian and Congolese refugees at the Mahama and Kigeme Refugee Camps in Rwanda. The best-selling sweetgrass plateaus make an ideal housewarming gift and are the perfect shape and size to be used as a fruit basket, hung in a cluster on a gallery wall, or simply placed as an accent piece in your favorite nook around the house.

About the artisans: The artisan industry is the second largest employer in the developing world. Despite its potential, the artisan sector remains fragmented and untapped as a source of sustainable, consistent income for millions of people across the globe. These talented artisans (the large majority of whom are women) do not have the skills, resources, or opportunities they need to participate in the global economy and support themselves and their families. Indego Africa is dedicated to changing that for 1,100 artisans and counting artisans throughout Rwanda and Ghana by showcasing their beautiful craft and investing in their education.

About the Brand

Since 2007, Indego Africa has been propelling the creation, growth, and sustainability of women-owned businesses in Africa. They equip our artisan partners with the vocational skills, business know-how and pipeline to global markets so they can become self-sufficient entrepreneurs. Today, they partner with more than 20 independent, artisan-owned businesses in Rwanda, Ghana and Refugee Camps.

Indego Africa seeks the highest standards of ethical and environmental responsibility in the production of all of their products. They use a range of natural, raw materials sourced in Rwanda and Ghana including sweetgrass, banana leaf, bolga straw, raffia, organic yarn, and palm leaf. They also partner with several groups that use salvaged materials in their production processes including recycled tin and upcycled cowhorn in Rwanda and recycled brass in Ghana. In their product process, they repurpose scrap fabrics and other leftover materials across our product lines to reduce waste and schedule large batch cargo shipments from Africa to New York to reduce their carbon footprint.
