The hand-carved bird ornament in matte white comes from branches of the Jacaranda tree. Jacaranda trees add to the beauty of Rwanda, with their feathery leaves and small purple flowers. They are also special in that they grow back after being cut. Artisans use Jacaranda branches to carve these charming little birds, which are similar in size to Rwandan fire finches. The white hand-carved bird looks beautiful clustered against the dark evergreen of a Christmas tree. Please note that the shape of the bird ornaments vary slightly due to the styles of the individual woodcarvers. Each bird includes a beautiful tag sharing the name of the artisan and their cooperative.

About the artisan: For more than four decades, Paul Nzabonimpaye crafted beautiful items from wood. Since his death in 2011, his son Hezekiah has carried on with Paul’s work. Hezekiah’s expertise lies in carving birds but he also carves baskets and wooden gift boxes. Hezekiah, like Paul before him, uses the income from woodcarving to supplement the yield gained from farming the small family field. The money helps to repair and enhance the home and purchase household essentials such as food, clothing and soap.

Hezekiah’s birds are among Azizi Life’s most well-loved products. He now desires to teach other young people how to carve so that they can join in his work. Hezekiah enjoys transmitting his knowledge as his father did to him.

Economy orders, shipped via UPS Ground or USPS Ground Advantage, typically arrive in 1-5 business days based on destination. Express orders are sent via UPS Next Day Air and arrive within 1-2 business days.
Domestic economy shipping is free on orders over $100.
Returns:
We accept exchanges and returns, free of charge, within 30 days of the delivery date. Regular-priced items can be returned for store credit or exchange.
